Police Bust Fake Alcoholic Drinks Factory In Lagos, Apprehend Suspects

The spokesperson for the State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the discovery in a statement shared on his social media handle on Thursday.

According to Hundeyin, acting on credible intelligence, officers from the Isokoko Division raided a house in Agege suspected to be housing the illicit factory. Upon investigation, they arrested four individuals linked to the illegal distillery and confiscated a significant quantity of fake drinks, empty bottles, and labels of various brands.

A video clip accompanying the statement showcased the suspects apprehended during the operation.

The prevalence of counterfeit beverages and alcoholic drinks in the Nigerian market has been a growing concern. Last December, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NDLEA) intercepted a group of counterfeiters at the Eziukwu market in Aba, Abia state.

The counterfeiters were found to be engaged in the production of a wide range of fake beverages, including wines, soft drinks, and other items, with an estimated value exceeding N750 million.

The collaborative effort between the NDLEA and other security agencies led to the successful operation, which was initiated based on a tip-off. The counterfeiters’ illicit activities extended beyond fake beverages, encompassing the manufacturing of adulterated products, particularly different types of wine from popular brands.

The intercepted counterfeit beverages included products mimicking well-known brands such as Seaman Schnapps, Henessy, Four Cousins, Carlo Rossi, Jenney, Chelsea London Dry Gin, Schnapp Dry Gin, McDowells, Black Labels, Gordons, Martell, Campari, Smirnoff ice, Eva non-alcoholic drink, Evra non-alcoholic drink, Cartel, and others.

This interception underscores the commitment of the NDLEA to safeguarding the safety and integrity of the Nigerian market. The agency remains dedicated to combating the production and distribution of counterfeit beverages in collaboration with other security agencies, sending a clear message to perpetrators of such illegal activities.
