Addressing critics, Pope Francis mentioned, “Those who protest vehemently belong to small ideological groups. A special case is Africans: for them, homosexuality is something bad from a cultural point of view, and they don’t tolerate it.” However, he trusted that everyone would be reassured by the “Fiducia Supplicans” declaration, emphasizing inclusion over division.

When questioned about potential church splits, Pope Francis dismissed concerns, noting that small groups with schismatic tendencies should be allowed to pass, urging the church to look ahead. Despite recent health challenges, the 87-year-old pontiff assured, “There are some aches and pains, but it’s better now. I’m fine.”

Last month, the Vatican’s “Fiducia Supplicans” document permitting blessings for same-sex couples stirred global debate within the Catholic Church. The Vatican clarified that such blessings should not be part of regular church ceremonies or linked to civil unions or weddings, maintaining its stance on marriage between a man and a woman.

Acknowledging resistance, particularly in Africa where same-sex activity can lead to severe consequences, Pope Francis emphasized that priests should consider the context, sensitivities, and appropriate ways when granting blessings.

In Nigeria, the Catholic Bishops Conference stated that Catholic churches in the country would not perform blessings for same-sex unions, citing adherence to God’s law, Church teachings, national laws, and cultural sensibilities.
