Pope Francis Reveals: 34-Year Ago I Vow To Abstain From Watching Television
Pope Francis has opened up about a personal vow he made 34 years ago to refrain from watching television. The esteemed clergyman shared that he imposed this self-ban after encountering objectionable content on a TV show…….READ ALSO Pope Francis Condemns Abortion And Surrogacy As Grave Offences Against Human Dignity
Explaining his decision, the Supreme Pontiff recalled a specific incident on July 15, 1990, when he was watching television with fellow priests and stumbled upon scenes of an adult nature that troubled his conscience. This experience prompted him to retreat to his room and reflect on the appropriateness of a priest engaging with such content.
Subsequently, during a mass for the feast of the Madonna del Carmelo, Pope Francis made a solemn vow never to watch television again. Since then, he has abstained from television viewing for nearly 34 years, with only a few exceptions.
Despite his vow, the Pope admitted to occasionally breaking his self-imposed ban for significant events such as the swearing-in of a new president or during times of personal circumstances, like when he followed Sunday mass while receiving medical treatment at the Gemelli University Hospital in Rome.
However, Pope Francis emphasized that he did not watch many major world events, not out of disdain, but out of respect for the commitment he made. He cited examples like abstaining from watching the coronation of Charles III, the new British king, and various other significant global occurrences.
The Pope’s revelations came to light through his new book, “Life: My Story Through History,” where he candidly shares personal anecdotes and reflections on his life journey.
