Blessing Godday, aged 32 and a mother of nine, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing another woman, Mrs Imeran Idema, to death over a bunch of plantains.
The incident, which unfolded on January 28, 2023, saw Blessing allegedly stealing the plantains from a plantation in an attempt to procure food for her children. Mrs Idema, who was tasked with guarding the plantation for her family, confronted Blessing and demanded she surrender the stolen produce.
An eyewitness detailed the confrontation, stating, “Mrs. Imeran Idema, machete in hand, immediately accosted her (Blessing) and asked her to surrender the bunch of plantain. ‘Drop that plantain,’ Imeran shouted as she approached Blessing, who also had a sharp machete with which she had illegally harvested the bunch of plantain.”
A heated argument ensued, leading to physical altercations. Imeran, attempting to thwart Blessing from escaping, managed to land a blow on Blessing’s right foot. In retaliation, Blessing unleashed a vicious attack with her machete, inflicting two cuts on Imeran’s head and shoulder.
Imeran collapsed in pain as Blessing fled the scene, leaving the stolen plantains behind. Members of Imeran’s family rushed to her aid upon hearing her screams, took her for medical treatment, and reported the incident to the police.
Blessing was initially arrested, questioned, and then released for medical attention due to a cut on her foot. However, upon learning of Imeran’s death, she was rearrested. The Rivers State Police Command, through its spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating that Blessing had been charged to court.
This tragic episode highlights the severity of disputes over resources and the dire consequences that can result from such conflicts within communities.
