In his recent New Year broadcast, Governor Kefas emphasized his administration’s dedication to addressing the state’s security challenges, prioritizing the protection of lives and property in 2024.

Meanwhile, the Senate expressed concern over the apparent disparity in care between dogs and inmates in the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS). During the 2024 budget defense session, Committee Chairman Adams Oshiomhole highlighted the stark difference in daily feeding costs: N800 for each of the NCS’s 900 dogs compared to N750 for an inmate.

Oshiomhole, a former governor of Edo State, raised concerns about the potential impact on inmates’ rehabilitation and suggested that this issue is rooted in appropriations rather than service management.

The Comptroller General of the Correctional Service, Haliru Nababa, confirmed the feeding cost figures and acknowledged the inadequacy of the allocated amount for inmates’ meals.

He disclosed a proposal to increase the daily feeding cost for an inmate to N3,000, submitted to the Minister of Interior. Nababa urged the lawmakers for assistance, emphasizing the gross inadequacy of the current budget for feeding each inmate at N750 per day.
