Senate Gives Kyari, NUPRC Boss 24 Hours To Appear For Budget Defense

Malam Kyari

On Wednesday, Senator Adeola Olamilekan, the Chairman of the Senate Appropriation Committee, issued a directive compelling Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), to appear before the committee within 24 hours.

Senator Olamilekan emphasized that failure to comply with this summons undermines the legislature and sabotages the ongoing process. Additionally, he instructed Kyari to be accompanied by the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) during the appearance.

During their presentation, Kyari and the Executive Secretary are required to provide a comprehensive list of all individual companies operating with Oil Mining Lease (OML) licenses in Nigeria, along with the approved total daily production output.

Senator Olamilekan expressed concerns about attributing some of the revenues crucial for the 2024 budget to the NNPCL, an entity owned by the Federal Government and accountable to it, as well as to the three arms of government.

It’s worth noting that the NNPCL had previously ignored summons from the Senate, marking the second instance of non-compliance, in relation to the committee’s investigation into over N11 trillion expenditure on the turnaround maintenance of refineries between 2010 and 2023.

The absence of Kyari, whose entity is central to the investigation, stalled the Senate panel’s efforts to make progress on the matter.
