Sokoto Governor’s Aide Jailed for Posting Governor’s O’Level Failures: PDP Condemns Arrest

Sokoto State as Shafiu Umar, an aide to former Governor Aminu Tambuwal, finds himself behind bars. Umar was recently remanded in a correctional facility for a Facebook post that has ignited controversy and political tension.

The post in question included a video ridiculing the current governor, Ahmad Aliyu, for his struggle with English. Alongside the video, Umar circulated a document allegedly showing Governor Aliyu’s secondary school results, claiming that he had failed English.

Further escalating the situation, Umar shared another post featuring a video of Governor Aliyu’s wife, Fatima, distributing money during her birthday celebration. These actions have led to serious legal consequences, with Umar facing charges of circulating injurious falsehood and defamation under the Penal Code law.

On Monday, Magistrate Fatima Hassan presided over the case, ordering Umar’s remand while barring reporters from the courtroom. According to the police’s First Information Report (FIR), Umar’s actions from July include spreading videos and documents that allegedly defame Governor Aliyu and his family.

The FIR details the charges against Umar, citing that his posts were designed to tarnish the reputation of the governor and his wife. The allegations of circulating falsehoods and defamation have led to Umar being held in custody. The magistrate has adjourned the bail hearing until September 6, leaving Umar detained until then.

In response to the arrest, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has criticized the current administration, accusing Governor Aliyu of targeting Tambuwal’s supporters for political gain. The PDP argues that the arrest is politically motivated and an attempt to silence dissent.
