These actions have led to serious legal consequences, with Umar facing charges of circulating injurious falsehood and defamation under the Penal Code law.

On Monday, Magistrate Fatima Hassan presided over the case, ordering Umar’s remand while barring reporters from the courtroom. According to the police’s First Information Report (FIR), Umar’s actions from July include spreading videos and documents that allegedly defame Governor Aliyu and his family.

The FIR details the charges against Umar, citing that his posts were designed to tarnish the reputation of the governor and his wife. The allegations of circulating falsehoods and defamation have led to Umar being held in custody. The magistrate has adjourned the bail hearing until September 6, leaving Umar detained until then.
