Stop Selecting Vice Chancellors for Universities, ASUU Advises Federal Government
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called for the federal government to cease its involvement in the appointment of Vice Chancellors (VCs) for public universities in Nigeria. ASUU argues that this responsibility should lie solely with the governing councils of the institutions…….READ MORE
Key Points:
-
ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, highlighted the political interference in university appointments and how it undermines the integrity of the process.
-
According to the law, governing councils should be responsible for appointing VCs, with the council selecting three candidates, from which one is sent to the President (through the Minister of Education) for ratification.
-
Quote: “If the system is allowed to work as it should, there won’t be any problem… I will ask government to hands-off completely in the appointment of a new VC.”
Clarification of the Appointment Process:
-
Osodeke explained that the governing council should follow a clear, merit-based process, and the President’s role should be limited to ratification rather than direct involvement in the selection.
-
He also suggested that grievances in the appointment process could be taken to the courts for a transparent resolution, especially in cases of unfairness.
The union’s call aims to reduce external interference and ensure that qualified candidates are selected based on merit rather than political considerations.
