“There Has Been A Lot Of Sacrifices – Seyi Law Opens Up On His Comedy Journey”

Ace Nigerian comedian, Seyi Law, has reflected on his two-decade journey in the entertainment industry, recounting the personal sacrifices and struggles that shaped his career. As he prepares to mark 20 years on stage, the comedian revealed that his success story is one built on resilience, discomfort, and bold decisions to chase opportunities.

According to Ireporter Online, Seyi Law disclosed in a recent interview that one of the first major choices he made was leaving his uncle’s home in Orile to live with his aunt in Ebute Meta, Lagos, in order to be closer to performance opportunities. Though the new environment was far less comfortable, he embraced it as a stepping stone to growth.

He further recalled teaming up with his friend, Emeka Smith, to leave Lagos in search of gigs at Nigerian universities. Without the means to afford hotels, they often slept in study halls, bathed wherever they could, and moved around campuses until they secured opportunities to perform at social events. Their efforts took them to institutions such as Obafemi Awolowo University, the University of Ibadan, Olabisi Onabanjo University, UNILAG, and LASU, where Seyi Law once performed as a backup act for singer 9ice at a law dinner.

Reflecting on his journey, the comedian stated: “It’s been 20 years and there has been a lot of sacrifices to get to where I am today. But when success comes, you sometimes forget the struggles. Like they say, ‘A day of joy erases years of sorrow.’”

Seyi Law also highlighted his passion for mentoring younger entertainers, a culture he learned from comedy legend Ali Baba. According to him, once he secured his own apartment, he opened his doors to budding comedians who later became household names. Even after relocating to Ikorodu, he continued to provide shelter and guidance to upcoming acts.

He revealed that his international shows also created opportunities for emerging musicians, providing them their first visas to perform abroad. Notably, artistes like Kizz Daniel, Adekunle Gold, and Woli Arole benefitted from this gesture, with Arole often acknowledging the impact of Seyi Law’s platform on his career.
