They Want Jonathan To Carry Their Coffin” – Shehu Sani Mocks PDP Faction
Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has criticised efforts by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to draft former President Goodluck Jonathan into the 2027 presidential race, describing the move as belated and driven by political expediency.
In a statement shared via his social media platform on Monday, Sani reacted to reports that a PDP faction had adopted Jonathan as its preferred presidential candidate ahead of the next general election.
The former lawmaker argued that those currently championing Jonathan’s return to the political stage failed to support such a move when the party was in a stronger position and better placed to mount a formidable electoral challenge.
According to him, the PDP had a more realistic opportunity to present Jonathan as a candidate during the 2023 election cycle when the party still maintained greater political relevance and organisational strength.
Sani suggested that the renewed push for Jonathan’s candidacy was not necessarily aimed at facilitating a genuine return to power for the former president. Rather, he contended that the initiative appeared to be an attempt to leverage Jonathan’s political influence and stature to revive a party that has struggled with internal challenges and declining fortunes.
His remarks included a pointed analogy, stating that those behind the move now wanted the former president to help rescue a platform they had allowed to weaken over time.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has called on Jonathan to publicly distance himself from reports linking him to a presidential ticket allegedly being promoted by a political group.
In a statement released through his social media account, Keyamo described the development as a political spectacle and criticised those behind the initiative for drawing the former president into what he characterised as an unnecessary political drama.
The minister further questioned the legitimacy of individuals reportedly offering Jonathan a presidential ticket, arguing that it was inappropriate for persons without recognised political standing to make such declarations on behalf of any political movement.
