Torrential Terror: Lagos Urges Mass Evacuation As Rising Waters Threaten Lives

The Lagos State Government has issued a serious evacuation advisory to residents of flood-prone communities including parts of Lekki, Ikorodu, and Ajegunle, urging them to relocate to higher ground amid worsening weather conditions.

According to iReporter Online, this warning came in response to persistent downpours that have triggered intense flooding, leaving homes and streets submerged across several neighborhoods.

In an official advisory released on Tuesday, authorities emphasized the urgency of the situation, pointing to predictions by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) that forecast even heavier rainfall in the weeks ahead.

Speaking on Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, stressed the importance of prompt relocation during this critical period.

“Those around the Ajilete axis, particularly Ajegunle, need to move,” he warned. “Residents in parts of Ikorodu—especially Majidun—and sections of the Lekki corridor should also take immediate precautions.”

Wahab clarified that not all areas are at risk,

“Epe has always been safe, and areas like Mushin and Ikeja are expected to remain secure,” he added.

According to iReporter Online, many residents have already experienced flooding in their homes, with vehicles and properties damaged by rising waters.

The government reiterated that those in lowland areas should temporarily relocate to upland regions until the rains subside.

Meanwhile, tragedy has struck in Niger State, where at least 22 lives were lost and 20 others injured in a lone trailer accident along the Lapai–Lambata highway early Monday morning.

The truck, reportedly traveling from Kano to Lagos with passengers and cattle, veered off the road around 3 a.m.

Confirming the incident, FRSC Sector Commander Aishat Saadu said 42 persons were involved, and the injured were rushed to FMC Lambata, while the deceased were transported to General Hospital, Suleja. According to iReporter Online, most of the victims were from Zamfara and were traveling for commercial purposes.

In another devastating incident, six people—including a mother and five of her children—were killed when a building collapsed in Dankama LGA of Katsina State following a heavy downpour around 2 a.m. on Tuesday.

The father of the victims, Malam Muhammad Sani, confirmed that the family was asleep when the structure gave way, leaving three others injured and hospitalized.

The Katsina State Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the tragedy and sent officials to assess the damage and support the bereaved family.
