Tragedy Strikes: Fire Engulfs Bungalow In Ilorin

A fire outbreak in the early hours of Saturday destroyed parts of a six-room bungalow at Danialu Alapata Compound in the Gaa Akabi area of Ilorin, Kwara State. The incident, which occurred around 2:11 a.m., was quickly brought under control by operatives of the Kwara State Fire Service, preventing the blaze from spreading to neighboring structures.

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the fire service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, only two of the six rooms in the bungalow were significantly affected. “Through the swift efforts of our firefighters, the blaze was contained, preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building and nearby properties,” he said.

Adekunle added that preliminary investigations indicated the fire was caused by a power surge, which ignited combustible materials in the affected rooms.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, urged residents to observe safety precautions to avoid similar occurrences. “Residents should ensure the installation of surge protectors, avoid overloading electrical systems, and have regular inspections of wiring by qualified professionals,” he advised. Muhammed also emphasized the importance of switching off electrical appliances when not in use and promptly reporting fire emergencies to authorities.

The fire service reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, highlighting a recent increase in fire outbreaks across the state. Notable incidents include the March 12 fire at Owode Market in Offa, which destroyed six shops and goods worth millions of naira, as well as a recent blaze at Aata Compound in Ilorin and a shop fire at Akolapo Plaza earlier in the week.
