Trump Is Behind My Plan To Return Fuel Subsidy” — Atiku

African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that United States President Donald Trump supports his proposal to restore fuel subsidy in Nigeria if he wins the 2027 presidential election.

According to Ireporter Online, the former vice president made the claim through a statement issued by his spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, while outlining the details of his proposed fuel subsidy policy.

Atiku said his proposal would focus on what he described as a “Production Subsidy,” designed to support domestic petroleum production and refining rather than encourage dependence on imported fuel.

He explained that the policy would involve government support for locally produced and refined petroleum products, increased supply, price monitoring and measures to ensure consumers benefit from lower pump prices.

According to Atiku, strengthening local refining capacity and increasing domestic supply would help reduce pressure on Nigerians and put more money back into the pockets of ordinary citizens.

He also claimed that the approach aligns with the United States’ support for strategic domestic energy production, arguing that Trump’s position demonstrates the importance of government intervention in critical sectors.

Atiku further criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, accusing the government of opposing measures aimed at providing relief to ordinary Nigerians while granting waivers, incentives and concessions to multinational oil companies and businesses allegedly linked to the administration.

He questioned why government intervention should be considered economically unsound when it is intended to benefit ordinary Nigerians, while similar incentives are extended to large businesses.

The ADC candidate maintained that his proposed production subsidy would be aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s domestic energy sector, improving supply and reducing the financial burden of fuel costs on citizens.

Atiku is expected to make the proposed policy a key part of his economic agenda as the 2027 presidential election approaches.
