Uncertain-Future Of Wizkid And Davido’s Long-Standing-Rivalry (View Details)
The rivalry between Nigerian Afrobeats titans Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, known as Wizkid, and David Adedeji Adeleke, aka Davido, has persisted for nearly a decade without any signs of resolution. These two superstars, recognized as top-tier artists globally, have been entangled in a love-hate relationship marked by competition and occasional collaboration.
The origins of their feud remain unclear, but the rivalry dates back to around 2014, coinciding with the release of Yemi Alade’s debut album ‘King of Queens.’ Over the years, both artists have seen immense success, boasting multiple awards and international recognition. Their respective fan bases, Wizkid FC and Davido’s 30BG, frequently clash on social media, often escalating tensions between the artists.
Recent hostilities peaked on April 29, 2024, with both artists engaging in name-calling on the platform X. This episode drew mixed reactions, with some finding it entertaining and others expressing disappointment. Olawale Olaleye, Deputy Editor of This Day Newspaper, criticized their behavior as immature, reflecting poorly on their management teams.
The initial spark of their feud is believed to have occurred on July 28, 2014, following a contentious tweet by Wizkid after his New York show, which Davido interpreted as a slight. Although they briefly reconciled in 2018, performing at each other’s concerts, the peace was short-lived.
Tensions resumed in 2020 after an unsuccessful attempt by Davido to collaborate with Wizkid on an album and tour. Their rivalry was further inflamed by Wizkid’s collaboration with Burna Boy in 2021, during Burna Boy’s own feud with Davido.
A moment of solidarity emerged in 2022 when Wizkid delayed his album release to commiserate with Davido after the tragic loss of his son. This gesture was followed by an announcement in January 2023 of a joint tour, suggesting a thaw in their relationship. However, the peace was again disrupted in 2024 following perceived slights on social media.
Despite their rivalry, Wizkid and Davido share similar tastes in luxury lifestyles and have achieved significant milestones internationally, including collaborations with American artists and notable award nominations. However, their differing social circles and frequent conflicts continue to fuel speculation about whether their feud will ever truly end.
