Unity Fountain Showdown: Police Stop NASU, SSANU Protest March!The Federal Capital Territory, FCT Police Command, has clarified why its officers prevented members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) from departing the protest site at Unity Fountain in Abuja.

Reports indicated that protesters gathered at Unity Fountain early Thursday to demonstrate against the withholding of salaries for four months. Their intention was to march to the Federal Ministries of Education and Labour and Employment.

Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, explained to journalists at the protest site that the unions planned to deliver letters to both ministries.

In response to queries about the restriction, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, clarified in an interview with DAILY POST that the decision was reached through mutual agreement between the unions and the police command.

Adeh stated, “It was agreed that the protest would remain confined to Unity Fountain to prevent it from spilling onto the streets and causing disorder.”

She elaborated, “They submitted a protest request, but the understanding was that activities would be confined to Unity Fountain. Representatives of each association would address the media and subsequently deliver their grievances to the appropriate authorities, without disrupting public order by moving into the streets.”
