US Embassy Sounds Alarm: Americans Face Deportation Over Visa Breach in Nigeria!

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has issued a critical advisory to American citizens currently residing in the country, urging strict adherence to new immigration rules recently announced by the Nigerian government. This follows a broader crackdown on immigration violations globally, and particularly intensified under recent policies aligned with directives reminiscent of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s hardline stance.

According to IREPORTER ONLINE, the U.S. Embassy cautioned that Americans in Nigeria who overstay their visa could face severe consequences including deportation and long-term bans from re-entering the country. The warning emphasized the urgency for U.S. citizens to regularise their stay through Nigeria’s newly launched immigration amnesty portal, which remains open only until July 31, 2025.

The advisory, issued via the embassy’s official website, noted that effective August 1, 2025, Nigeria’s Federal Government would begin enforcing strict sanctions on foreigners who have overstayed their visas. According to IREPORTER ONLINE, individuals are expected to settle their status through the portal before the deadline to avoid the introduction of financial penalties and bans that could extend up to 10 years depending on the duration of the overstay.

The Nigerian Ministry of Interior had earlier introduced a $15 daily surcharge for each day a visa is overstayed, beginning May 1, 2025. This penalty structure is scheduled to be enforced immediately after the amnesty period ends. Visitors who fail to regularise their status by August 1 will be liable for accrued daily charges. Overstays beyond six months attract a five-year re-entry ban, while those exceeding a year will face a 10-year ban.

According to IREPORTER ONLINE, the amnesty portal enables foreigners to process their stay permits without physically visiting any immigration office. It supports the submission of applications, uploading of necessary documents, and issuance of clearance online—making compliance simpler and avoiding long queues or unofficial fees.

The U.S. Embassy has strongly advised its citizens to avoid risking non-compliance, highlighting the seriousness of these new regulations. Americans are urged to act swiftly to regularise their status before the expiration of the amnesty window to avert penalties that could significantly disrupt their ability to travel or remain in Nigeria.
