Vigilantism Gone Wrong: Trio Arrested For Assaulting Alleged Sugarcane Thief

In a shocking case of vigilantism, two men and a teenage boy have been apprehended for brutally attacking a man they accused of stealing sugarcane, shedding light on the dangers of mob justice.

The victim, Beven Zenderani (25), was ambushed by the suspects while walking with a friend near James Gumbi’s plot. Allegations surfaced that the duo had purportedly pilfered sugarcane from Gumbi’s property, sparking the violent confrontation.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, revealing that Zenderani, the assault victim, has since been located and taken to a local hospital for urgent medical attention. The assault, which occurred on February 18, 2024, left Zenderani severely injured.

Following thorough investigations, law enforcement successfully apprehended three suspects linked to the vicious attack. The arrested individuals include Hardlife Mananga (21), Luckson Ruzive (30), and a 15-year-old juvenile, who has been released into parental custody pending further legal proceedings.

Efforts to bring the mastermind behind the assault, James Gumbi, to justice are underway, with police launching a manhunt in Harare. Additionally, security operatives are actively pursuing three other individuals suspected of involvement in the appalling incident.
