The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed as fake a viral letter claiming that the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results of candidates from 50 schools across Nigeria were withheld over alleged examination malpractice.

According to Ireporter Online, the widely circulated document, dated August 2 and purportedly signed by the Head of WAEC Nigeria, Amos Dangut, directed the affected schools to submit detailed reports on the alleged malpractice within 14 days or risk additional sanctions.

The letter further claimed that the examination body had withheld the results of candidates from the listed schools pending investigations into the reported irregularities.

However, WAEC swiftly disowned the document, stressing that it did not originate from the council.

In a statement shared through its official X account on Wednesday, the examination body described the letter as false and urged members of the public to ignore its contents.

WAEC stated that the viral notice was fake and warned candidates, schools and the general public against relying on the misleading information.

The clarification came only hours after the council officially announced the release of the 2026 WASSCE results for school candidates, reassuring stakeholders that only information issued through its verified communication channels should be regarded as authentic.
