Why Obaseki May Be Burning His Candle From Both Ends As Edo Gov May Likely Clash With Wike Over PDP Vice Presidential Slot

There is a friend of mine who is a brother and at the same time a mentor, I always get amused when he cries out of burning his candle at both ends. Although his complaints usually arise out of financial stress on a subject matter.

Anyway, the idiom burning the candle at both ends literally means to exhaust oneself, it could be from hard work, multitasking, etc.

A candle that is lit at both ends will burn up more than twice as quickly/last less than half as long as one lit on one end alone.

Let me gist you of an intriguing political chess game going on in the South-South as regards the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. There is a conspiracy theory of the South likely producing the vice president under an Atiku presidential ticket.

This conspiracy theory is very valid and there are insinuations that a serving Governor from the South would serve as Atiku’s running mate. This is a good political strategy that can be able to place the PDP in a vantage position.

Before I go further please take note that I am just a political analyst and it has nothing to do with my personal affiliations and belief, it is strictly from information gathered from the streets I make my submissions, it would be erroneous to mislead yourself and take it as my personal view.

During the heat of last year’s Gubernatorial election in Edo State, Governor Godwin Obaseki was booted out of the APC and became a political orphan overnight, with nowhere to go and left in the wilderness to exhaust himself the PDP offered the Governor shelter and provided the umbrella against the heavy rainstorm.

Obaseki somehow manipulated his way from the top and ended up becoming the PDP’s flagbearer in just a few days to his becoming a member of the party. So many intrigues played along the way as regards his acceptance and if we can recall vividly it was then-Gov Wike summoned the press and said he was washing his hands off Obaseki’s matter and called out some certain Tax Collectors who obviously were out to CASH out from the whole exercise.

Well, Obaseki defeated the APC hands down and convincingly too, the proud Edo Electorates said they were fed up with GODFATHERISM.

Soon as Obaseki was sworn in for a second term the PARADE CHANGED from a servant leader to a PARTY LANDLORD.

Obaseki moved in to immediately assert his position as the leader of the party in the State. Typical of how things played out in Obaseki’s first tenure when after becoming the Governor, Adams Oshiomhole emerged as the National Chairman of the APC.

This year Chief Dan Orbih emerged as the National Chairman South-South of PDP. From then to now things have fallen apart and the centre can no longer hold. In the same typical manner, Obaseki traded with Oshiomhole by bringing up his ward chairman to suspend a WHOLE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, the Governor also deployed this same move on Chief Dan Orbih. He was allegedly sent packing by a so-called Edo North Senatorial Leadership of the PDP.

Same tactics, same moves but how long would this last? Herein lies the problem, Obaseki has fallen out with the hands that fed him in Edo State PDP and the party members are not impressed with the Governor just like the way APC members were disappointed with Obaseki when he was their member.

So the fact on the ground is that Obaseki has lost the trust of both APC party members and the PDP members as well, now let me tell you why Obaseki may not be perturbed by this fact which he very well knows. Obaseki’s second term was won on the MANTRA of Godfatherism and the people on the streets claim to have voted against Godfatherism.

Obaseki like I earlier stated in one of my write-ups works with figures, which means he goes after data of what is favourable to win the day and he spends a lot on that, you saw the impressive situation ROOM the Governor created for the elections? It was not just for fancy as the Governor spends well when it comes to data collection. This is where Obaseki’s rivals /foes lack a lot.

Like a good writer would always spend 70% of his time figuring out his CATCHY headline that is how Obaseki spends 70% of his resources going after constructive data. I must confess Obaseki has a good history when it comes to the collection of valuable data, Ignore him at your own peril.

Now let us go back to the basics again, apologies to the late Fela Anikulapo Kuti, “Why Obaseki May Be Burning His Candle From Both Ends” from the aforementioned explanations it is clear that the Governor has destroyed the bridge as regards APC party members and PDP party members in “Edo” state. Take note of my keywords in “EDO” State. As a sitting Governor, Obaseki knows his vantage position, truth be said he can manipulate his way in either of these two parties from the top, hence I used the word EDO STATE as my keyword.

Every national body needs a sitting State Governor. So it means the room is still very much open for Obaseki to return to the APC or even emerge as the PDP’s vice presidential candidate to Atiku.

With no support from any of the two political party members in Edo State what is left of the support Obaseki has is the people. Unfortunately, the Governor seems to be losing that support presently because of the same reasons he was loved for,  GODFATHERISM.

Edo people are not too impressed with the many political battles of Obaseki which is taking its toll in the State, many are complaining that Obaseki wants to be the only Edo man shining, his bulldozing of party members from both parties now makes it look like there is a role bigger than GODFATHERISM the governor is currently playing.

Now again let me shock you, Obaseki may not be too impressed with what the Edo people say if he becomes fixated with the vice presidency. He would go for analysis and see his acceptance at the national scene. Data interpretation is very key in the digital era. Nigerians might be impressed with him and if he seeks the support of the generality of the people out there then so be it. It may even be an advantage and not a disadvantage.

So why do we fear that Obaseki may be burning his candle at both ends?

Obaseki is fighting too many battles and would gradually turn the fight into a national fight in PDP, already Obaseki has lost the trust of both party members at the state level and his set to clash with them at the national level if his ambition of becoming the Vice president is not nipped in the bud.

Governor Wike never personally liked Obaseki, I recall how he lambasted Obaseki publicly years ago accusing him of looking for his certificates. Wike is a ruthless player anytime any day, so let us do an analogy and see how fast Obaseki’s candle would burn out from both ends.

Days ago the creme de la creme of the PDP  paid respect to Chief Dan Orbih at his Abuja’s residence when he celebrated his 60th birthday. From Atiku to Wike, Seyi Makinde to Okowa, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom, former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, Hon Ogbeide Ihama, just name them they were all in attendance. The celebration at short notice was a sign of the battle ahead between Obaseki and the PDP in the State.

Obaseki happens to be a newcomer in PDP and his relationship with the party is fragile. A relationship between two persons can burn out from any of the ends. Is Obaseki biting more than he can chew? Can the Edo State Governor be Thrice as lucky? Will the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike’s vice-presidential ambition in PDP consume Obaseki?

Let me leave you guys with these short proverbs.

‘You cannot do two opposite things at one and the same time; you cannot exhaust your energies in one direction, and yet reserve them unimpaired for something else. If you go to bed late you cannot get up early.’

“You cannot run with the hare and hunt with the hounds, You cannot sell the cow and drink the milk ”

THAT IS TO SAY” You no fit enjoy the milk and at the same time still flex the advantages of the money wey u take sell the cow, in other words, you must have one thing or the other, not both.
