Why Tinubu Should Get Eight Years – Okiro Speaks Out

Former Inspector-General of Police, Mike Okiro, has publicly endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, praising the administration for its courage, reform-driven agenda, and historic impact on Nigeria’s democracy. Speaking with journalists on Sunday in Ibadan, Oyo State, Okiro noted that Tinubu assumed office during a period of significant national challenges and has tackled them through carefully sequenced and gradual policy measures.

According to Okiro, the President’s leadership style demonstrates uncommon boldness in addressing long-standing structural issues, and the cross-sector reforms, though initially challenging, are beginning to yield positive results that could reposition Nigeria for sustainable growth before the end of his first term.

“President Tinubu has taken difficult but necessary decisions. These reforms are beginning to yield results, and with time, Nigerians will see the full benefits,” Okiro said. He singled out the removal of the fuel subsidy as one of the administration’s toughest but most critical measures for economic stabilization, emphasizing that no recent Nigerian President has exhibited such decisiveness.

Okiro urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, stating that continued backing would allow the administration to consolidate its reforms and achieve its long-term vision. Highlighting Tinubu’s record as Lagos State Governor, he said it offers a clear picture of what the country could expect over a full eight-year presidency.

On the issue of national security, Okiro expressed optimism that ongoing interventions would significantly curb criminal activity. He credited his past collaboration with Tinubu in Lagos for the state’s relative peace, which he said provides a model for broader national security efforts.

During his visit to Ibadan, Okiro formally endorsed Tinubu and inaugurated the Grassroots Mobilisation for Tinubu initiative. He also visited the family of the late Sarkin Sasa to pay his respects. Okiro was accompanied by leaders of various youth and elders’ forums, including Alhaji Mahmud Sani-Yerima, National Coordinator of the Northern Youth and Elder’s Awareness Forum, and other zonal coordinators.
