‘They Tied My Hands And Dragged Me On The Floor Like A Common Criminal’ – Ajaero Narrates His Brutal Beating

Comrade Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), asserted on Friday that operatives of the Nigeria Police in Imo State supervised the thugs who assaulted him after his arrest.

Ajaero was admitted to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owerri on Wednesday, November 1, following alleged brutalization by suspected state agents and security operatives.

During a world press conference in Abuja on Friday, Ajaero recounted the incident, stating that he was beaten and dragged on the floor like a common criminal.

The NLC President, along with other national leaders of NLC and TUC, had protested at the state Secretariat in Owerri, citing grievances such as unpaid salaries, allowances, pensions, gratuities, and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.

“I can’t explain the beating I received. They tied my hands and dragged me on the floor like a common criminal”, he said.

Ajaero recounted that following the brutalization by both thugs and their alleged police supervisors, he was forcibly placed in a police van and transported to Tiger Base, a police post known for torture and various human rights violations.

At Tiger Base police post, Ajaero stated that he underwent several hours of questioning by unsympathetic policemen. Despite his pleas for medical attention and requests to be taken to the hospital, he claimed that his appeals fell on deaf ears.

“They simply told me to say my last prayers”, said Ajaero.

Ajaero explained that after the police had completed their interrogation, he was taken to the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, who then directed that he should be transferred to a police hospital for medical treatment.

Ajaero contested the allegation made by Governor Hope Uzodimma, claiming that he was blending politics with unionism, stating that the labor issue in Imo predated his election as NLC President.

He refuted the accusation by the Imo State government that he is a card-carrying member of the Labour Party (LP), asserting that he attended only two political rallies in his life – one when Adams Oshiomhole was running for governor of Edo State and the second for Nasir Idris, the former NLC Treasurer, who is now the governor of Kebbi State.

“I am not a card-carrying member of any political party as alleged”, he said.
