[BREAKING] Liberia Presidential Election: Jonathan Reacts As Weah Concedes Defeat

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has commended the display of statesmanship by Liberian President George Weah in the recently concluded presidential election for graciously accepting defeat to opposition leader Joseph Boakai.

Liberia’s electoral commission reported that Boakai secured 50.89 percent after counting ballots from over 99 percent of polling stations, with Weah obtaining 49.11 percent.

In his Saturday tweets, titled ‘Liberia wins, Democracy gains,’ Jonathan expressed satisfaction with the democratic process’s outcome in Liberia.

The former Nigerian leader praised Weah for acknowledging defeat and extending congratulations to his opponent even before the official declaration.

The tweet partly read, “I am also particularly grateful to the outgoing President, His Excellency George Weah, who has just conceded defeat and congratulated his opponent even ahead of the official declaration of the final result by the National Election Commission of Liberia.

“By doing this, President Weah has exhibited an exemplary display of statesmanship and commitment to the peace and progress of his country.”

He further encouraged Boakai to demonstrate magnanimity in victory and to strive to perpetuate efforts to unify and progress his country.

Jonathan, who headed the West African Elders Forum (@TheWAEF) Mediation Mission during both the October 10, 2023, general elections and the November 14, 2023, Presidential run-off poll in Liberia, emphasized that the victory and the peaceful electoral process were positive developments for democracy and the West African regional bloc—the Economic Community of West African States.

“I am delighted that at the end of the exercise, Liberia wins, democracy gains and our sub-region, ECOWAS, is better for it,” he stated.

Boakai held the position of vice-president for 12 years under the former president, Ellen Sirleaf, who was the first elected female African head of state.

The 78-year-old will formally assume his presidential responsibilities when he is inaugurated in January 2024.

Weah, a retired professional footballer, assumed the presidency of Liberia in 2018.

He is the inaugural African former professional footballer to ascend to the role of head of state.
