BREAKING: Losers And Winners Emerge As Appeal Court Clears Air On Kano Judgement

The Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal, Umar Bangari, has clarified the controversies surrounding the judgment delivered by the court on the Kano Governorship Election dispute.

In response, Bangari stated that the discrepancy in the judgment body was a typographical error that did not, in any way, invalidate or alter the court’s findings and conclusions.

The chief registrar assured Nigerians that the error would be rectified once the parties involved in the matter filed a formal application to that effect.

He referenced Order 23 Rule 4 of the Court of Appeal Handbook, which empowers the court to correct any clerical error once detected by the court or any of the parties involved.

He insisted that, contrary to insinuations, the court’s judgment remained valid.

The judgment, which upheld the decision of the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, nullified the election of Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) as the winner of the March 18 Governorship Election, leading to uproar and various interpretations.

In the past week, the appellate court also overturned the victories of three governors declared winners by INEC in the March 2023 poll, all of whom belong to opposition parties.

In Zamfara, the appellate court invalidated Governor Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and declared the poll inconclusive after about eight months. The court ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election in three local government areas of the state, where PDP’s Lawal and APC’s Bello Matawalle are major contenders.

On Sunday, the appellate court sacked PDP’s Caleb Mutfwang in Plateau State and directed INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to APC’s Nentawe Goshwe. The court held that the party violated the court order for a valid congress in the state’s 17 local government areas.
