Onu alleges that his sudden removal from the race was a calculated move with political motivations aimed at demoralizing his supporters. The court, led by Justice Hyeladziya Ngajiwa, ruled that the PDP failed to meet the necessary criteria in the primary election, ultimately disqualifying Onu from the poll.

Undeterred by the court’s decision, Onu has vowed to press on with the electoral process, expressing his intention to appeal the ruling. He urged his supporters not to be disheartened, emphasizing that the Federal High Court is not the final arbiter in such matters.

In a statement, Onu said, “I am going to appeal the judgment disqualifying me. Today, we received a contrived judgment from the federal high court, Abakaliki, that PDP did not give INEC 21 days’ notice of congresses for the by-election.”

While acknowledging the politically motivated nature of the judgment, Onu assured his supporters that he would file an appeal promptly to legally resume his participation in the election. Encouraging his followers to turn out and vote on February 3, Onu underscored the significance of their participation, noting that the federal high court is not the final authority in pre-election matters.

He concluded, “The federal high court is not the final court in pre-election matters, and as such, our participation is sacrosanct, and our votes will count. God bless the PDP and the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The bye-election in Ebonyi South aims to fill the vacancy left by David Umahi, who was appointed as Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu. The sudden court ruling has injected an unexpected layer of suspense into the electoral landscape.
