In a thrilling revelation, CAF confirmed that the triumphant team in AFCON 2023 will be showered with a staggering $7 million for their championship victory. The runners-up will not be left empty-handed, securing a handsome $4 million.
The excitement extends to the semi-finalists, with two teams that were defeated in the semi-finals each receiving a substantial $2.5 million. Moving down the rankings, the four teams eliminated in the quarter-finals will each be granted $1.3 million.
The cash rewards continue for the eight teams knocked out in the round of 16, as they will be compensated with $800,000 each. Additionally, two teams that finished third in their respective groups but failed to advance will not leave the tournament empty-handed, receiving $700,000 each.
Even the teams that finished last in their groups will enjoy a share of the bounty, with $500,000 awarded to each of the six teams.
Here’s the breakdown of the AFCON 2023 prize money revealed by CAF:
- Winner: $7,000,000
- Runners-up: $4,000,000
- Semi-finalists (two teams): $2,500,000 x 2
- Quarter-finalists (four teams): $1,300,000 x 4
- Round of 16 (eight teams): $800,000 x 8
- Teams ranked 3rd in their group but fail to qualify for the round of 16 (2 teams): $700,000 x 2
- Teams ranked 4th in each of the six groups (six teams): $500 000 x 6
As the competition intensifies, today’s quarterfinal stage at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan promises more thrilling matches, including the encounter between Nigeria and Angola, as Nigeria aims to secure its fourth Africa Cup of Nations title. The last time Nigeria claimed this prestigious title was in 2013.
