Youth Alleges Claims That Soldiers Killed Are Fighting For Tompolo, Not Peacekeeping In Okuama

In a widely circulated video, the unidentified youth claimed that the soldiers were not on a peacekeeping mission in Okuama but were instead fighting in support of Niger Delta warlord, Tompolo.

According to the youth, the soldiers were allegedly involved in protecting the interests of certain individuals involved in the region’s oil bunkering activities, rather than maintaining peace between warring communities. He asserted that the soldiers were deployed to Okuama to advance the agenda of specific groups involved in the contentious land issues in the area.

“Okuama and Okoloba have land issues but Ijaw people, whom the federal government has given power to go after bunkery, are using the Army to guide their products to the point of sales. They used the Army to pick people from Okuama community,” the youth stated in the video.

Furthermore, he claimed that three individuals from Okuama were allegedly taken away by the soldiers and subsequently killed, suggesting a sinister motive behind the military’s actions in the community.

“The three people taken were slaughtered, and now they are coming back to pick community leaders, and you know that once community leaders are captured; the youths are powerless,” he added.

The youth’s allegations directly contradict the Nigerian Army’s earlier statement, which claimed that the troops were on a peaceful and mediatory mission following a reported communal clash between Okuama and Okoloba communities. The Army stated that the soldiers were ambushed and killed in a brutal manner by armed youth from the community.

The tragic incident resulted in the loss of a Commanding Officer, two Majors, one Captain, twelve soldiers, and a civilian. Investigations into the matter are ongoing, with the video adding a new dimension to the already complex situation in Okuama.
