Uzor, aged 36, was sentenced on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in Philadelphia by United States District Court Judge Kelley Brisbon Hodge.
United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero disclosed in a statement that on January 2, 2024, the defendant pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft.
The scheme typically entailed a co-conspirator impersonating a legitimate vendor, sending false invoices to the victim organization.
Uzor’s role was to establish multiple bank accounts using stolen identities unrelated to the crime. Another collaborator directed victims to transfer funds to these accounts, which Uzor swiftly withdrew and transferred elsewhere before detection.
In total, Uzor facilitated the theft of approximately $1.1 million from victimized businesses and individuals, with an additional $400,000 attempted theft. Among the victims was a nonprofit mental health care provider in Doylestown, PA.
U.S. Attorney Romero stated, “First, Victor Uzor victimized the people whose identities he stole to facilitate this scheme… My office is committed to holding accountable anyone involved in such a clear-cut case of fraud.”
Wayne A. Jacobs, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Philadelphia, emphasized the FBI’s dedication to dismantling fraud schemes and protecting citizens’ assets.
The case was investigated by the FBI and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Robert J. Livermore.
