Governors Forward State Police Proposal To NSA Ribadu, Await National Assembly Decision

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has formally submitted its input on the proposed state police framework to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, with the document set to be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative consideration, according to Ireporter Online.

The disclosure was made by the Chairman of the NGF and Governor of Kwara State, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence in Lagos. AbdulRazaq emphasized that consultations on state policing are ongoing among security stakeholders under the coordination of the NSA.

“Discussions on state police are ongoing among various security organizations led by the National Security Adviser, and the NGF has made its contribution,” AbdulRazaq said. “That document will be taken to the National Assembly to see how we can establish a legislative framework for state police.”

The NGF chairman reaffirmed the commitment of governors to strengthen collaboration with security agencies to combat insecurity nationwide. “As governors, we commit to renewing our collaboration with security forces to steadily defeat terrorism, expand infrastructure opportunities, and improve the lives of our people,” he stated. He also stressed the need for collective efforts to end security breaches across the country.

AbdulRazaq congratulated President Tinubu on his recent state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as historic and impactful. He noted that the visit, the first in 37 years, had produced significant agreements and investment proposals that are expected to strengthen Nigeria-UK relations and boost economic prosperity.

He further commended the President’s Renewed Hope agenda, highlighting that it has inspired greater citizen participation in nation-building and will likely translate into improved national security. The NGF chairman encouraged Nigerians, particularly leaders, to embrace values such as piety, selflessness, compassion, unity, and mutual understanding as vital for collective prosperity.

About 25 governors attended the meeting, signaling respect for the President’s leadership. Vice President Kashim Shettima, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and other senior officials were also present. Earlier, in February, the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, established a committee to develop modalities for the creation of state police.
