Reports from the BBC Hausa Service claimed on Monday that Sokoto State, along with other northern states, had secured foreign loans for developmental endeavors. According to the report, the current administration purportedly obtained a foreign loan totaling $489 million to facilitate substantial projects across the state.
In response to these allegations, Governor Sokoto, through his press secretary, Abubakar Bawa, rebuffed the claims, labeling them as deceptive and inaccurate.
He asserted that his administration had never procured loans from any entity, either domestic or international.
“Let me be unequivocal: I have not procured any loan since assuming office. The BBC report is grossly misleading, and I urge them to authenticate the information attributed to the Debt Management Service before broadcasting it,” Governor Sokoto declared.
He challenged anyone with evidence of loan applications or disbursements to come forward and present the documentation.
“You cannot acquire loans without adhering to specific protocols, including seeking approval from the state legislature. In our case, no such actions have occurred,” he emphasized.
Governor Sokoto clarified that all projects undertaken across the state were financed using monthly allocations from the Federation Account and internally generated revenue (IGR).
“At present, we do not require loans to carry out projects because we are effectively managing the state’s limited resources,” he affirmed.
