Northern Governors Rally Behind Tinubu On Security, Development Agenda

Governors from the 19 northern states, operating under the Northern States Governors’ Forum (NGF), have reaffirmed their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in efforts to address insecurity and accelerate development across the region.

According to Ireporter Online, the resolution was reached during a meeting held on Monday, March 30, at the Gombe State Governor’s Lodge in Asokoro, Abuja. The session was presided over by the Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, who also endorsed the communiqué issued at the end of deliberations.

In the communiqué, the governors stressed the importance of sustained collaboration with the Federal Government and security agencies to tackle evolving security challenges in northern Nigeria. They commended the collective efforts of member states in addressing security and developmental concerns, noting that such measures are already yielding encouraging results, while pledging to strengthen and sustain these initiatives.

The forum also called on Nigerians to support the armed forces and other security agencies in their mission to restore peace and stability across the country.

Beyond security matters, the governors outlined plans to reinforce the forum’s internal framework through institutional reforms aimed at enhancing coordination and policy execution. They also backed the digitisation of the forum’s secretariat to improve efficiency, continuity, and overall service delivery.

On economic issues, the governors resolved to engage consultants to explore strategies for boosting internally generated revenue across the region. This, they explained, would involve identifying and harnessing untapped taxable resources to enhance financial sustainability among states.

The forum further pledged continued engagement with the Presidential Implementation Committee on Technology Transfer to facilitate the establishment of the New Nigeria Energy Company under the Sun Africa Project, an initiative expected to strengthen energy capacity and stimulate economic growth in the region.

The meeting comes amid renewed security concerns in parts of northern Nigeria, where incidents of banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency continue to pose serious threats to lives and livelihoods. Recent attacks in Kaduna and Plateau states have reportedly resulted in fatalities and abductions, further underscoring the urgency of coordinated security responses.

Governors in the region have consistently advocated stronger collaboration with security agencies and increased federal intervention to curb the persistent insecurity. Meanwhile, the administration of President Tinubu has maintained its focus on security sector reforms and economic revitalisation, including measures aimed at improving energy supply and boosting revenue generation nationwide.
