The Labour Party (LP) has set April 23 as the start date for its long-delayed congresses, with the national convention scheduled to take place on April 28 in Umuahia, Abia State. According to party officials, the move represents a significant step toward restructuring the party’s leadership ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party leaders noted that hosting the convention in Umuahia is both symbolic and strategic. The city is the political base of Alex Otti, the party’s only serving governor, and the location is intended to celebrate the party’s political progress while consolidating its strongest support base.

“We have only one governor; he is doing well, so we want to have it in his city, where we will celebrate with him as well,” Usman added.

The rescheduled timetable follows the postponement of the ward, local government, and state congresses to allow for broader participation and to address internal disputes. According to party officials, the delay was part of a broader reconciliation effort aimed at reuniting aggrieved members and strengthening the party ahead of the elections.
