UEFA Fines Bayern Munich After Champions League Controversy
According to Ireporter Online, Bayern Munich have avoided a supporter stadium closure but have been sanctioned with a significant financial penalty by UEFA following a crowd-related incident during their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena.
The incident occurred during the second leg of the tie earlier this month, when Bayern secured a dramatic late victory with two quick goals to advance to the semi-finals. In the aftermath of the thrilling finish, sections of the home supporters’ ultras reportedly breached pitch-side barriers in celebration, spilling onto the perimeter area and inadvertently causing harm to photographers stationed nearby.
Several media personnel were injured in the chaos, with one sustaining a concussion and another suffering a head injury, while others required medical attention following the disturbance.
UEFA subsequently announced a total fine of €89,625 imposed on the German champions. The breakdown of the sanction includes €40,000 for crowd disturbances, €30,000 for the display of an offensive banner targeting UEFA, €14,000 for blocked access routes, and €5,625 for the throwing of objects.
Despite earlier concerns that Bayern could face a partial stadium closure for their UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain, the governing body opted against such a measure, allowing the club to retain full supporter attendance.
Bayern’s sporting director Christoph Freund had earlier expressed optimism that the club would not be forced to play behind reduced capacity, insisting the team expected a full-house atmosphere for the high-stakes fixture.
“We expect to be able to celebrate a football festival with a full stadium against Paris,” Freund was quoted as saying prior to the final ruling.
