Premier League club Nottingham Forest have bid farewell to Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi as the forward prepares to leave the club this summer.

According to Ireporter Online, Awoniyi is close to completing a permanent transfer to newly promoted Coventry City after an inconsistent spell at Nottingham Forest.

The 29-year-old was given an emotional send-off on Sunday following Forest’s 2-0 victory over Stade Brestois at the City Ground. Players, members of staff and supporters gathered to honour the Nigerian international, who received a guard of honour after the match.

Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest from German Bundesliga side Union Berlin in 2022 for a reported £17.2 million. During his time with the club, he made 103 appearances and scored 23 goals for the Tricky Trees.

However, persistent injuries and a decline in form affected his position in the squad. He eventually fell behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the pecking order and was left out of Forest’s Europa League squad last season.

His playing time also reduced significantly during the 2025-2026 Premier League campaign, when he made only three starts. Despite his limited opportunities, he scored four goals in 17 appearances across all competitions.

Awoniyi’s difficult period at Forest was further compounded by a serious injury sustained during a match against Leicester City, when he suffered a ruptured intestine after colliding with a goalpost and was subsequently placed in an induced coma.

The Nigerian forward will now be hoping for a fresh start at Coventry City, where he is expected to reunite with fellow Super Eagles international Frank Onyeka.

Onyeka recently completed a permanent move to Coventry after spending the previous season at the club on loan and helping them secure promotion.

Awoniyi’s proposed transfer to the Sky Blues is reportedly worth around £17 million, although he is not expected to feature when Nottingham Forest face Arsenal in their opening Premier League fixture.
