ADC in Turmoil as Nafiu Bala Declares Himself Interim National Chairman

Nafiu Bala, the Gombe State governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2023 general elections, has declared himself the interim national chairman of the party, citing an ongoing leadership crisis allegedly engineered by “political hooligans.”

According to iReporter Online, Bala made this declaration during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, where he accused certain former party leaders of abandoning their constitutional responsibilities and handing over control of the ADC to external political actors with no legitimate ties to the party.

“In the circumstances, and also in furtherance of my constitutional mandate as the duly elected National Deputy Chairman of our great party,” Bala stated, “I now assume my constitutional duty and responsibility as the interim national chairman.”

He condemned the actions of the ousted leaders, describing their conduct as an unprecedented assault on democracy.

He further appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to urgently recognise the leadership transition and act in accordance with the ADC’s internal constitution.

According to iReporter Online, Bala decried what he called a “shoddily rehearsed political melodrama” in which the party’s internal structures were handed over to “political strangers,” a move he said undermines the will of ADC members and threatens the very fabric of the party’s democratic processes.

“We are witnessing acts of lawlessness by those who were once entrusted with leadership,” Bala asserted. “They have shamelessly transferred the party’s mandate to individuals who never belonged to or contested within the ADC. This is unacceptable and must be resisted.”

He further stressed that the constitution of the ADC contains clear and binding provisions on succession and the proper procedure for filling vacant offices. He vowed to defend the party’s internal democracy and challenge what he described as “gross acts of impunity.”

According to iReporter Online, Bala warned that if these unconstitutional moves are not reversed, legal action would be pursued to ensure that justice is served and party integrity is restored.

Reaffirming his loyalty to the ADC and its foundational principles, Bala concluded, “We are collectively determined to challenge this affront, protect our mandate, and ensure that only legitimate party members govern our affairs moving forward.”
