Amnesty Exposes Nigerian Security Forces’ Brutal ImpunityAmnesty International (AI) has criticized the lack of accountability in Nigeria’s security agencies, stating that personnel operate without restraint and often act against the citizens. AI Nigeria made this statement on Monday in response to an attack by Air Force personnel on staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and the Eko Distribution Company (Disco) Mushin Business Unit, located in Isolo, as well as the Ikeja Electric Oshodi Business Unit, on Okota Road in Lagos.

The incident reportedly began when the Eko Distribution Company cut off power access to the Sam Ethan Air Force Base in Bolade, Oshodi, due to an alleged billion-naira energy debt. In retaliation, Air Force personnel allegedly assaulted staff members of TCN, Eko Disco, and Ikeja Electric, and abducted some of them to their barracks where they were reportedly assaulted. Facilities at these power stations were also said to be damaged.

In a statement, Amnesty International condemned these actions, attributing them to a pervasive lack of accountability and a culture of impunity among Nigeria’s security forces. “Without accountability, the Air Force personnel would not have felt empowered to take the law into their own hands,” AI stated.

AI further asserted that Nigerian security operatives believe they can commit acts of assault, torture, and inhuman treatment without facing consequences. “Lack of accountability breeds and perpetuates impunity, creating an environment where Nigerian security operatives believe they have carte blanche to carry out acts of ill-treatment, assault, and torture,” AI declared.
