Anambra Showdown: NSCDC Busts Illegal Miners In Dramatic Raid

On June 28, 2024, the Anambra State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) apprehended four individuals engaged in unauthorized mining activities within the state.

The suspects were publicly displayed on Friday in Awka by Olatunde Maku, the NSCDC commandant in Anambra. Maku disclosed that the arrests took place on Thursday at Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area, in collaboration with Federal Mines Officers from the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development responsible for Anambra.

Identified as Nnamani Chidubem, Ekemezie Ifeanyi, Okolie Patrick, and Onyedika Somtoo, the arrested individuals were found mining laterite without the requisite approvals, resulting in environmental degradation in the region.

Among the items confiscated from the suspects were a truckload of Laterite bearing registration number LAGOS T-13038 LA, nine heavy-duty batteries, a heavy-duty hydraulic jack, and four fuel filters.

“This operation sends a clear message to illegal miners that their activities will no longer be tolerated,” emphasized Maku, highlighting the economic sabotage and environmental hazards associated with illegal mining.

Henry Bolarinwa from the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development echoed the importance of mining with valid licenses and at approved sites to curb revenue losses and mitigate environmental risks linked to illicit mining practices.
