APC Divided As Rival Factions Clash In Wamakko Vs. Lamido Leadership Battle

According to Daily Trust, the conflict stems from allegations of corruption, misgovernance, and disputes over public infrastructure demolition. Insiders report that the core issue is control over the state’s resources. “This goes beyond politics,” said one source. “It’s about who controls Sokoto’s wealth. Wamakko has been in charge for years, but Lamido believes the time for change has come.”

The situation escalated when the Lamido faction hinted at creating a parallel APC structure, aiming to “free” the party from the dominance of Governor Ahmed Aliyu and his mentor, Wamakko. Sani Yakubu Gudu, who represents Gudu/Tangaza Federal Constituency, expressed the frustrations of the Lamido camp: “We’re trying to save the APC from collapse under Aliyu and Wamakko. They’ve ignored their missteps, leaving us no choice but to act.”

The Lamido faction has gained quiet support from various political figures, including traditional leaders, government officials, and academics. Hon. Gudu criticized Governor Aliyu’s administration, accusing it of focusing on minor projects like city beautification while neglecting pressing issues such as unemployment, education, and the struggling agricultural sector. He also slammed the governor for failing to address increasing insecurity and banditry in the state.

In response, Sokoto APC Chairman Alhaji Isa Sadiq Achida dismissed the allegations, calling them baseless and labeling the critics as desperate politicians trying to remain relevant. He denied any corruption and insisted that the party remains united, rejecting claims of factionalism.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto has weighed in, blaming the APC’s infighting on poor governance and calling for transparency, particularly over a controversial N1.2 billion borehole repair project. The PDP also criticized the government’s handling of insecurity, especially as parts of the state face bandit attacks.

Amid the political turmoil, over 300 residents of Yauri Flats Estate protested plans by the government to demolish their homes, appealing to Senator Wamakko for intervention. However, Governor Aliyu refused to engage with the protesters.

Political analysts warn that if the crisis is not resolved, it could severely destabilize the APC in Sokoto, with the potential for Wamakko to defect to another party, such as the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
