The Kano State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, on September 20, nullified the governor’s election and declared Nasiru Gawuna, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the March 18 governorship poll.

Dissatisfied with the tribunal’s decision, the governor, represented by counsel Wole Olanipekun, sought the appellate court’s intervention to overturn the judgment.

Olanipekun disagreed with the tribunal’s ruling on deducting over 165,000 votes of the governor, highlighting it as the first instance in history where a tribunal annulled an election due to the non-signing of the back of ballot papers. He argued that the tribunal made an error and pointed out that it was unprecedented for a political party to file a case without including its candidate, who was then declared the winner.

In response, Akin Olujimi, counsel for the All Progressives Congress (APC), countered Olanipekun, asserting that the appeal court had explicitly stated that the non-signing of ballots constituted electoral malpractice.
