A group of 12 senior Gabonese military officers took to national television to announce their assumption of power.

This declaration came shortly after Gabon’s electoral authority reported early on Wednesday morning that President Ali Bongo had secured a third term in office.

One of the soldiers, speaking on the Gabon 24 TV channel, stated, “Observing irresponsible and unpredictable governance that has led to an ongoing deterioration in social unity, risking the country’s descent into chaos… we have chosen to safeguard peace by putting an end to the current regime.”

As per a report from Reuters news agency, the Gabonese government did not provide an immediate response.

Soldiers who had seized control have indefinitely closed Gabon’s borders, as communicated in a statement aired on the state-run Gabon 24 television channel.

A representative of the “Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions” conveyed, “The borders will remain closed until further notice.”

The military officers asserting power in Gabon conveyed optimism for the nation’s future, highlighting that Gabon will uphold its commitments to both national and international communities.

Addressing the public, neighboring communities, and the Gabonese diaspora, an officer reading from a statement on state TV urged, “We implore calmness and serenity. We also reaffirm our dedication to upholding Gabon’s obligations to the national and international arena.”

“Inhabitants of Gabon, we are finally embarking on a path toward happiness,” the statement concluded.
