Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS), confirmed the escape, attributing it to the weakened structural integrity caused by the heavy downpour. He stated that inmates exploited the damage to the facility’s walls to make their escape.

In response, the Correctional Service activated recapturing mechanisms in collaboration with sister security agencies. As a result, 10 fleeing inmates have been recaptured, with efforts ongoing to apprehend the remaining escapees.

Duza acknowledged the challenges posed by ageing correctional facilities, many of which were built during the colonial era. He assured the public of ongoing efforts to replace these facilities with modern ones, citing the construction of new ultra-modern custodial centres and the renovation of existing ones.

Despite the escape, the Correctional Service assured the public of its commitment to ensuring security and urged citizens to report any suspicious movements to the nearest security agency.
