Breaking: Olumide Akpata Leaves Labour Party For ADC

Former Edo State Labour Party governorship candidate Olumide Akpata has officially defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). According to Ireporter Online, the formal defection occurred on Tuesday at the ADC secretariat in Benin, where Akpata received his membership card from the state chairman, Kennedy Odion.

The event was attended by several prominent political figures, including Peter Obi, presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State; Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former APC national chairman and Edo’s first executive governor; and former Edo governor Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor.

Akpata stated that his decision to join the ADC was motivated by a desire to support the party’s vision for Nigeria, particularly following Obi’s defection to the party on December 31, 2025. He also acknowledged the backing of the ‘Obidient Movement’ and expressed his commitment to advancing positive change through his new political platform.

In his remarks, Peter Obi emphasized the need to build a nation that benefits all citizens rather than a select few. He highlighted the importance of transitioning Nigeria from a consumer-driven economy to one focused on production and reiterated his pledge to work toward a more inclusive and prosperous nation. “Our commitment to a new Nigeria is total, though they are doing everything possible to stop us. We must build a nation that works for all, not just a few. This country is currently working for a few; it shouldn’t be so. We are all Nigerians. As a matter of fact, we must move this country from the status of consumption to production,” he said.
