This announcement was made by Abdullahi Abubakar, the command’s Public Relations Officer, on Tuesday.
The decision to return the confiscated grain trucks aligns with President Tinubu’s directive over the weekend, instructing the NCS to release all food items seized at border communities, provided they are intended for sale within Nigerian markets. This move is part of efforts to bolster food availability and affordability nationwide.
During the handover ceremony at the command’s headquarters in Sokoto, Kamal Mohammed, the Customs Area Comptroller, urged traders to ensure that the grains are promptly distributed to Nigerian markets as intended. Mohammed reiterated the NCS’s commitment to monitoring the sales of these grains closely to prevent any attempt at smuggling them out of the country.
He emphasized that grains are listed under the extant Export Prohibition list, warning smugglers against any illegal transportation attempts.
Mohammed affirmed the NCS’s resolve to combat smuggling vigorously, declaring the borders a hostile environment for such activities.
In response, Dahiru Ladan, the Secretary of the Grain Sellers Association of Sokoto, expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his compassionate approach. Ladan assured the President and the NCS of the association’s dedication to ensuring that the grains are distributed within Nigerian markets, aligning with the government’s directive.
