Death Penalty For Offa Robbers: Shocking Twist As Torture Allegations Surface Against Police Operatives

Justice Haleemah Salman of the Kwara State High Court has found five individuals guilty in connection with the infamous Offa robbery case. The accused were convicted of illegal firearm possession, armed robbery, and negligent manslaughter.

Justice Salman delivered the ruling on Thursday, sentencing the five suspects to death for their roles in the 2018 Offa bank heist.

Naija News recalls that the Offa robbery, which occurred in 2018, shocked the nation. During the trial, Shamsudeen Bada, a key witness, claimed that members of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), led by the embattled DCP Abba Kyari, tortured him. He alleged that the operatives coerced him into falsely implicating former Senate President Bukola Saraki as a sponsor of the robbery.

Bada, who was the former Vice Chairman of Irepodun Local Government Area in Kwara State, detailed his ordeal in court during the trial in Ilorin, the state capital.

The five convicted individuals—Ayoade Akinnibosun, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Adeola Abraham, and two others—faced multiple charges, including conspiracy to rob the banks, the murder of nine police officers and civilians, and unlawful possession of firearms.

During cross-examination, Bada testified that while in detention, the IRT operatives promised to release the suspects if they falsely implicated Saraki in the robbery.
