Details Emerge As APC, PDP Members Clash In Port Harcourt

Members of Rivers State’s All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) exchanged gunshots on Monday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, over the inspection of electoral materials.

Trouble began when Tonye Cole, the APC Governorship Candidate in the March 18 election, and members of his party arrived at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the state capital to inspect materials used in the state’s previous election.

However, Cole was forced to turn back by PDP members who had already arrived at the INEC office prior to his arrival.

The situation became chaotic when PDP members demanded a joint inspection of election results as well as Certified True Copies of result sheets from the recently concluded 2023 general elections.

The PDP demonstrators had shut down both the waterlines and GRA areas of Aba Road, the two main access points to the INEC headquarters. No cars were able to drive through that stretch of Aba road from the ground lanes, and those on the GRA flyover are trapped due to a lack of an exit route.

The PDP protest was led by Edison Ehie, the re-elected Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and Samuel Nwanosike, the Chairman of the Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Despite the fact that the party won the governorship and State Assembly elections, the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, who led the protest, demanded that INEC allow the party to conduct a joint inspection of the materials used in the March 18 elections.

The protesters believed that their demand would bring about the level of transparency required to avoid unnecessary lawsuits and arguments.

Aside from the demand for joint inspection of materials, some inscriptions on placards displayed during the protest ask INEC to make Certified True Copies of results available.
