Drainage Blockage, Waste Dumping: Govt Issues Final Warning to Lagos Market
The Lagos State Government has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to traders at Alabarago Market to clean up the area or risk another market closure over repeated environmental violations.
Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the warning during an inspection of Alabarago, Idi-Araba, and Orile-Iganmu. He noted that Alabarago Market, previously sealed for similar offences, had once again turned into an illegal waste dump, with blocked drainage and roadside encroachment.
Wahab said a decision would be made by Monday evening on whether to shut down the market again if traders fail to comply. He emphasized that despite previous enforcement, the traders had regressed, jeopardizing public health and environmental safety.
He also used the opportunity to appeal to Lagosians, especially during Sallah celebrations, to take responsibility for their environment, manage waste properly, and cooperate with PSP waste collectors.
The commissioner urged citizens to celebrate responsibly and maintain clean surroundings, reiterating the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws.
