Edo Drug Syndicates On The Run As NDLEA Tightens The Net
The relentless crackdown on illicit drug trafficking and abuse in Edo State, spearheaded by Commander Mitchell Ofoyeju of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), is recording unprecedented momentum, according to IReporter Online.
Edo, one of Nigeria’s major cannabis-producing states, has been at the center of targeted NDLEA operations aimed at dismantling drug syndicates and ending the cycle of abuse.
Drawing from his successful track record at Tincan Island Port, Ofoyeju has launched aggressive raids on cannabis farms, intercepted massive drug consignments, and intensified public enlightenment campaigns in collaboration with the Edo State Government.
According to IReporter Online, these efforts have led to the seizure of over 53,520.80 kg of illicit substances—including cannabis, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and psychotropic drugs—valued at nearly a billion naira.
Beyond enforcement, Ofoyeju has prioritized community engagement, fostering inter-agency partnerships with the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, and other strategic bodies to strengthen intelligence-sharing and coordinate large-scale anti-drug operations.
In a message to youths, Ofoyeju stressed the importance of entrepreneurship as a viable path away from drugs, cultism, and cybercrime.
His bold leadership has not been without risks; NDLEA operatives have faced ambushes from drug cartels following major plantation destructions, but their resolve remains unshaken.
“We will not succumb to intimidation,” he declared, underscoring the NDLEA’s zero-tolerance stance.
The commander’s approach mirrors the national drug control strategy championed by NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd.), ensuring that Edo’s anti-drug war is both proactive and holistic.
The recognition of Ofoyeju’s work by youth associations and civic groups, coupled with strategic plans to monitor drug trafficking routes through air, land, and waterways, highlights a deep commitment to securing the state’s future.
As the campaign gains more traction, according to IReporter Online, Edo is steadily advancing toward a drug-free society through a combination of firm enforcement, public sensitization, and collaborative security action—cementing Ofoyeju’s place as a central figure in Nigeria’s wider war against illicit drugs.
