Elon Musk Considering Charging All X Users Monthly Payment (DETAILS)

Musk X

Elon Musk, the owner of the online platform X, mentioned on Monday the possibility of introducing a monthly fee for all users as a measure to reduce the presence of bots.

Since Elon Musk took control of the platform for $44 billion in October of last year, he has implemented numerous changes. This includes laying off thousands of employees, introducing a paid premium option, reducing content moderation, and reinstating previously banned accounts, including that of former US president Donald Trump.

In July, Musk stated that the platform experienced a roughly 50% decrease in advertising revenue.

Bots, which are accounts run by computer programs rather than humans, are prevalent on X. They are often utilized to artificially amplify political messages or promote racial hatred.

During a discussion with Musk on Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu brought up the issue of online anti-Semitism and inquired about how X could “prevent the use of bots — armies of bots — to replicate and amplify it.”

Musk responded that the company was considering “implementing a small monthly payment for use of the X system.”

“It’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots,” he explained. “Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny — call it a tenth of a penny — but if somebody even has to pay a few dollars, some minor amount, the effective cost of bots is very high. And then you also have to get a new payment method every time you have a new bot.”

This conversation, which was broadcast on X, coincided with a dispute between the Tesla tycoon and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a US-based Jewish organization. Musk has accused the ADL of making baseless allegations of anti-Semitism that have driven away advertisers and negatively impacted his company’s revenue. He has even threatened to sue for billions of dollars.
