Key Highlights

• Flooding Wreaks Havoc: Excessive rains and dam releases across Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, and other states destroyed onion crops at various growth stages in late 2024.
• Seed Crisis: Genuine onion seeds, critical for dry season production, became scarce. Imported seeds from France, Spain, and Thailand also faced disruptions due to global climate issues.
• Adulterated Seeds: Desperate measures led to the importation of fake seeds from neighboring countries, affecting 60-70% of farmers and leaving them with subpar crops.
• Financial Blow: Farmers report skyrocketing input costs—onion seeds now cost up to ₦180,000 per 500 grams, a sharp increase from ₦20,000 in 2023.

Livelihoods at Risk

The scarcity has hit farmers hard, especially in communities like Wurno, Sokoto State, where onion farming is the primary livelihood. The lack of storage facilities exacerbates the problem, with many losing over half of their harvest before it reaches the market.

Aliyu has urged the Federal Government and stakeholders to implement urgent interventions, including:

• Establishing a national farmers’ register to ensure transparency in agricultural programs.
• Investing in modern storage facilities to reduce post-harvest losses.
• Providing subsidies on seeds and fertilizers to ease farmers’ burdens.

Consumer Impact

With onion prices ranging between ₦200 and ₦500 per bulb, Nigerian households face inflated food costs, adding to the economic strain on families.
