FCT Police Rescue Two Abandoned Babies, Launch Search For Their Mothers

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two babies who were allegedly abandoned at separate locations in Kurudu and Gwagwalada, Abuja, and appealed to the public for information that could help trace their mothers or other relatives.

According to Ireporter Online, the two incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, with residents in both communities raising the alarm after discovering the abandoned children.

In Kurudu, a resident identified as Mr Innocent reportedly heard a baby crying around Obodo Street at about 5:30 p.m. After tracing the sound, he discovered a baby boy wrapped in cloth and placed inside a carton.

The resident subsequently reported the discovery at the Kurudu Police Station at about 5:45 p.m., prompting officers from the division, alongside personnel from the Juvenile and Women Care (JWC) Department, to respond to the location.

The baby was rescued and taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment. Police authorities said the child was found to be in stable condition after examination.

Following the necessary documentation, the baby was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care as investigations continued.

Later that night, another case was reported in Gwagwalada. A resident, identified as Mr Ibrahim, reportedly heard the cry of a baby outside his gate at about 9:40 p.m.

He and other members of the community reportedly found a baby girl at the premises and promptly alerted the police.

The incident was reported at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15 p.m., after which officers from the JWC Department took the child to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and care.

The police said the baby would also be transferred to the Social Welfare Department, while investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding her abandonment.

The FCT Police Command said efforts were ongoing to identify those responsible for abandoning the children and trace their families.

In a statement issued on Friday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, commended the residents and community members who responded promptly and helped ensure the safety of the two babies.

The command appealed to anyone with useful information about the identities or whereabouts of the babies’ mothers or relatives to contact the police and assist with the ongoing investigation.
