Federal High Court Grants 60-Day Detention For Nigerian Suspected Of ISIS Affiliation

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a 60-day detention period for Emmanuel Osase, a Nigerian suspected of having ties to the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The court, presided over by Justice Inyang Ekwo, acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and the necessity for thorough investigations. Osase, who was arrested on March 11, is accused of spreading ISIS propaganda, opposing Nigeria’s democratic system, and advocating for terrorist attacks on Nigeria and its symbols of sovereignty.

The DSS argued that Osase’s release could compromise ongoing investigations. According to an affidavit, Osase was previously convicted of terrorism-related offenses in France and deported after serving a five-year sentence.

Despite this, he allegedly continued engaging in terrorist activities, prompting his arrest in Nigeria. The court granted the DSS’s request for detention and adjourned the matter until June 3, 2024.
